This splendid castle, with over 800 years of history, is the official residence of the Bishop of Durham and offers a peerless venue for your wedding ceremony and/or reception.
St Peter's Chapel, originally built in the 12th century as the great banquet hall, is the private chapel of the Bishop but is available for residents of the parish, and sometimes for others by special licence, to hold their wedding ceremony.
The Law of Marriage is complicated and so we would suggest that initially advice is sought from the Diocesan Registrar (01388 603073), who will be pleased to advise you on the different procedures available to establish your eligibility.
The opportunity also exists for the blessing of marriages carried out by civil licence, although we do not carry out civil services at the castle. The chapel houses a fine example of a 17th organ built by Father Smith, organ builder to King Charles II. There is a website about this organ as well as other organs of special interest in the area.
The impressive staterooms are suitable for receptions for up to one hundred and twenty guests, while larger events and evening functions can be accommodated in splendid marquees in the beautiful grounds. These well tended gardens also provide a beautiful backdrop for your wedding photographs, capturing moments of this day for years to come.
At Auckland Castle we know that your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Our emphasis is therefore on quality of service and individual attention, to ensure that your special day is the happy and memorable occasion that you deserve.
On receipt of the first details from your enquiry, we will supply a proposal suggesting an outline of times and cost for your consideration. From this, a full working schedule will be developed taking you through everything that needs to be organised.
